The Compelling Case for Natural Gas Vehicles
5 November 2007
Economics, Environmental and Energy Security Issues Rejuvenate Market
The following item first appeared in the October issue of American Gas Magazine and was accompanied by this item.
Vehicular natural gas use exceeded 200 million gasoline-gallon-equivalents (GGE) in 2005 and will likely surpass 225 million GGE (or 280 million therm) by year-end 2007, according to a new report prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by the Georgia-based Clean Vehicle Education Foundation (CVEF). The two-part report, which tracks natural gas vehicle (NGV) inventories and fuel use over the past forty years, reviews how economics, technology, government policy and utility activity affect the market’s development. Most important, the report sheds light on what works and why, and makes recommendations to help NGV industry participants and policymakers allocate limited resources to activities that will have the most impact.
Be Green, Save Green: Utilities Talk About Their NGV Programs
1 November 2007
Utilities find that using NGVs in their own fleets is a great way to BE green and SAVE green. For example, the service fleet at Citizens Gas & Coke Utility (CGCU) of Indianapolis, IN includes 117 CNG pick-up trucks and vans. Barbara Pesut-Hanley, Industrial Sales Consultant and manager of the NGV marketing program, says the vehicles are a “high-visibility reminder to our customers that we ‘walk the talk’ when it comes to using clean alternative fuels.” Thanks to her NGV marketing efforts, several local government agencies and private businesses use another 125 NGVs in CGCU’s service territory each day, many of which fuel at the utility’s two owned-and-operated public access CNG stations. Pesut-Hanley estimates that CGCU will recoup between $45,000 and $50,000 in federal motor fuels excise tax credits on their 2007 CNG sales.

World First CNG Rally Win For OMV-Harrach Team
22 October 2007
At the risk of repeating ourselves , natural gas engines in sports applications continue to break down barriers, this time with the OMV CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Rally Team taking out first place in the Ostarrichi-Rallye last weekend. Just 18 months after first entering competition in a CNG vehicle, Beppo Harrach and Andreas Schindlbacher finished the rally 47.7 seconds ahead of the second place vehicle. Making the win even sweeter, the OMV team was driving their older Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI, rather than the current model Evo IX that the team has been using this season. The win is believed to be the first for a CNG vehicle in an international rally championship event.
